At the Rockcliffe Flying Club, we help turn your aviation dreams into reality. As a Transport Canada approved Flight Training Unit and certified Ontario Private Career College, we offer both recreational and professional pilot training, supporting you at every stage of your journey.

Our programs are delivered by a dedicated, high-calibre team and include ground school, flight instruction, examinations, and full administrative support. With a fleet of seven Cessna 172 aircraft and a certified Redbird simulator, we provide a safe, reliable, and comprehensive environment for learning and progression.

  • Student Permit

    The Student Pilot Permit is issued by Transport Canada and is the first formal step in a pilot’s training journey. It authorizes a student to conduct solo flight under the supervision of a licensed flight instructor once sufficient skill and knowledge have been demonstrated.

  • Recreational Pilot Permit

    The Recreational Pilot Permit is an entry-level Transport Canada licence that offers a practical path into aviation. It focuses on core flying skills, decision-making, and safety, while providing a foundation for those who may later pursue a Private Pilot Licence.

  • Private Pilot Licence

    The Private Pilot Licence, issued by Transport Canada, is the standard foundation for independent flying, offering greater privileges than the Recreational Pilot Permit. PPL holders can carry multiple passengers and fly day or night under VFR with the appropriate rating, and it serves as the primary pathway toward advanced and professional pilot training.

  • Night Rating

    The Night Rating, issued by Transport Canada, allows Private Pilot Licence holders to operate an aircraft during nighttime conditions under Visual Flight Rules.Pilots develop the skills required to safely manage reduced visibility, visual illusions, and night navigation. Once completed, the rating removes the daytime-only restriction, enabling greater flexibility for travel and flight operations after sunset.

  • Commercial Pilot Licence

    The Commercial Pilot Licence, issued by Transport Canada, is the professional standard required to operate aircraft for hire or reward. It is designed for pilots pursuing a career in aviation and builds on the foundational skills developed during Private Pilot training with a strong emphasis on precision, consistency, and operational decision-making.

  • Multi-Engine Rating

    The Multi-Engine Rating is a Transport Canada qualification that expands a pilot’s privileges to operate aircraft with more than one engine. It focuses on multi-engine handling, asymmetric flight, and advanced systems, while providing a foundation for those pursuing more advanced ratings and professional flying.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • RFC has many advantages for learning to fly and is a great place to meet other pilots!

    The Rockcliffe Airport is small enough, making it is easy to learn to fly in an environment where there is less stress and traffic than that of a large airport. RFC is close enough to medium and large airports to provide all the practice locations you need. We like to give individual attention to students and tailor the training program to meet their needs. We offer a full range of general aviation training programs. Our graduates have an enviable reputation throughout the industry. We offer training in English and French.

    As a club, Rockcliffe welcomes new members and provides them with many opportunities to fly with more seasoned pilots to hone in on their skills.

  • Sure! As long as your glasses or contact lenses correct your vision to the required degree. Your medical exam will confirm whether your eyes meet the required degree of sight. All pilots need to conduct a Transport Canada medical at regular intervals to ensure health and safety.

  • During your training, you will most likely rent an aircraft from our club. Once you have your license, you can continue to rent or you can buy an aircraft. Another popular solution is fractional ownership: you buy an aircraft with friends or buy into an existing partnership that owns an aircraft. Many people find this the most affordable solution and one that distributes the cost of maintenance of the aircraft.

  • You start flying on your introductory lesson. This first lesson is intended to familiarize you with the sensations of flying in a small aircraft and start showing you how to fly the aircraft. Don’t worry, you won’t be expected to land the aircraft by yourself on your first lesson!

    The initial portion of your flight training will be with an instructor (this is called dual) and then by yourself (solo). As you acquire flying skills, your instructor will let you do more and more of the flying.

    Some people start ground school first, before starting to fly. This can be done, but you get more out of ground school if you have a few hours of dual flying under your belt first.
