NOTAM NOTAM NOTAM
This weekend the Rockcliffe Airport is host to the Classic Air Rallye. As such NOTAM's will be in effect from 1530 to 1930 UTC both Saturday and Sunday. To meet the requirements of the Special Aviation Event Authority issued by Transport Canada we are required to keep all non-essential personnel outside the airports perimeter fence during the NOTAM periods.
To this end Airport / Marina Road will be barricaded and both the pedestrian and vehicle entrance gates will be locked and access to the airport through the Clubhouse will not be authorized.
We trust everyone's understanding and co-operation to ensure a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Aviation Parkway Pavement Rehabilitation Work - Traffic Advisory Update
As you probably noticed by now, construction is underway on Aviation Parkway. The NCC has released the following update on how this contruction will affect traffic:
Canada’s Capital Region — The National Capital Commission (NCC) wishes to
update the public on the continuing pavement rehabilitation work on the
Aviation Parkway, from the Rockcliffe Parkway to Highway 417 and on the
Hemlock Road ramps.
From August 23 to 27, the Aviation Parkway, from the Rockcliffe Parkway to
Montreal Road, will be reduced to one lane for all traffic between 7 am and
7 pm. Flagmen will be on the construction site to direct traffic.
On August 26 and 27 and on August 30 and 31, the Hemlock Road ramps, both
to and from the Aviation Parkway, will be closed to traffic. Signs will be
posted to notify drivers of these closures.
Motorists must use caution and should expect delays throughout the
construction period. Cyclists will not be permitted on the roadway and must
use alternate routes. The remainder of the work will run until early
December 2010.
This work, being conducted as part of the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund
received by the NCC in January 2010, also includes the construction of a
new recreational pathway link to the Aviation Pathway on the west side of
the Aviation Parkway, from Montreal Road to Ogilvie Road.
For more information, the public may contact the NCC at 613-239-5000,
1-800-465-1867, 613-239-5090 (TTY) or 1-866-661-3530 (toll-free TTY) or
visit the NCC’s website at www.canadascapital.gc.ca.
RedBird Full Motion Simulator arrived.
The anticipation is ended. Our new simulator has arrived. It was delivered yesterday August 20th and received with open arms, open walls and a lot of help from Marcel, Jacques, Steven, Jacobo and Jean. Watch as it unfolds its wings on our photo gallery:
http://www.rfc.ca/etc/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=album42
Plan is to install it on August 30th and 31st. If anyone wants to help on the 30th there will be some lifting required to assemble the components under the direction of a RedBird systems installer. Contact Jean@rfc.ca
Then we will be running tests on it until approval by Transport Canada which is expected by mid-September.

Sunday August 15th PM, Shad Ireland Run on the Parkway
This Sunday August 15th from 1 PM to 4PM approximately, the “Simply Fit” Family Friendly 1K walk/run and Competitive 5K walk/run & 10K run will be staged on the Rockcliffe Parkway eastwards starting from the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.
This run will be hosted by the Shad Ireland Foundation Canada. Its programs are focused on improving the lives of Canadians (both children and adults) living with kidney disease while educating those who are at risk for developing a renal diagnosis on its leading causes, prevention methods, and societal impact.
The flying club and yacht club will generally be accessible during the run, except for 5-10 minute periods where the 3 different runs will start. You will be asked to park and wait for the initial part of the run to clear the road between the museum and Airport Marina road. This will be around 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30. There will be volunteer monitors directing traffic.
The Alcatel Bike days will also be held on Sunday morning.
Heads-up: Oshkosh Conditions [Update]
Due to weather at Oshkosh this year, the condition of aircraft camping and parking areas is poor. As a result, operations there are limited to hard surfaces only for now.
One husky pilot writes:
OSH was swimming with so much water, the tow trucks were working overtime. Cars, trucks, RV’s and airplanes getting stuck. I have my 26” tires on and wasn’t too worried, but with camping areas temporarily closed, I took a look at things and decided to scrub.
Hopefully the weather will improve and with the help of volunteers, the grounds will be useable. If you are planning to attend, please check the latest Oshkosh Parking Status for up-to-date information.
Thanks Tony Hunt for the heads-up
Update July 29th, 2010:

Operation in Class C Airspace
What would you do???
You are doing a sightseeing flight over the Gatineau Hills. You wish to fly over downtown Ottawa for a city tour before heading back to the Rockcliffe airport.
Ottawa Terminal has told you to contact Ottawa Tower. When you switch frequencies, Ottawa Tower seems to be extremely busy with other traffic and is unable to reply. You are about to enter their airspace. What would you do?
A) Continue with your sightseeing flight. Ottawa Terminal said it is OK, and you aren't landing at the Ottawa airport anyways so you won't be in their way. Also, you have a VFR transponder code so they know your intentions.
B) Descend to 500' AGL in order to stay below the Tower's radar.
C) Remain clear of Ottawa Tower's control zone until you are cleared by Ottawa Tower to enter.
If you answered A or B you would be breaking the law!! In this case, the correct thing to do would be C. Terminal cannot clear you into Tower's class C airspace. Just because Terminal directs you to fly towards the city for your sightseeing flight, does not mean you are allowed to enter the Control Zone!! Before you enter class C airspace, you MUST recieve clearance from the appropriate controlling agency (In this case, Ottawa Tower).
